Support HM 545- Florida Protecting Our Right to Keep and Bear Arms

We just received an email from Richard Corcoran (R), Florida House of Representatives, that stated:

Dear Friend,

Like you, I am an ardent supporter of the 2^nd Amendment. We must do all we can on the state level to ensure that your 2^nd Amendment rights are not taken away. That’s why I have co-sponsored HM 545.

Upon passage, it will be sent to President Obama, the Senate President, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and to each member of the Florida delegation to the United States Congress. It is a declaration of the Legislature’s intent to “…lawfully use all of its authority and power to resist or overturn any federal gun control measure that violates the right of the people of this state to keep and bear arms.”

What is HM 545?

HM 545 is a memorial from the Florida House of Representatives that is addressed to the President and Congress urging them to protect the constitutional right of the people to keep and bear arms. How HM 545 Addresses the Supreme Court

In addition to the Second Amendment right to bear arms the Supreme Court of the United States has withheld that the Second Amendment ‘protects the right of individuals to possess any bearable arms commonly used for lawful purposes.’ This too is mentioned in this document to show previous judgment and precedent.

How HM 545 Addresses President Barack Obama DIRECTLY

HM 545 addresses the fact the President has made it clear that he is urging Congress to pass legislation that would restrict the lawful acquisition and possession of firearms. The document then goes on to cite that the Supreme Court has recognized that the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution prohibits the Federal Government from requiring the state or its officers to take part in any federal gun control scheme. Therefore it is the duty of the Legislature to exercise all of its lawful authority and power to protect the right of the people of Florida to keep and bear arms.

How HM 545 Intends to Resist New Gun Laws

If the Legislature sees to it that the laws are changed to restrict the arms available to law-abiding citizens the proponents of HM 545 claims that:

Florida intends to lawfully use all of its authority and power to resist or overturn any federal gun control measure that violates the right of the people of this state to keep and bear arms.

The document concludes by indicating copies of this memorial will be given to the President, the President of Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and to each member of the Florida delegation of the U.S. Congress.
