How Many Americans Defend Themselves with Handguns?

Proponents of both concealed carry permits and gun rights across America say that incidents involving armed criminals can be greatly reduced if more good guys are armed with a concealed carry permit (and actively carry) in self defense.

The National Rifle Association and other concealed carry guns rights groups are not alone in these beliefs - American citizens are also signing the same tune.

In Florida alone, one million concealed carry permits have been issued and statistics show that one in every 17 residents of the sunshine state have a concealed carry license.

Armed criminals should take heed in Florida as the chances of a movie theater shooting in this state taking place is unlikely to go down the same way it did in Colorado.

Concealed Carry and Self-Defense Statistics

In the wake of violent crime in the United States, one might think that these advocates of concealed carry laws are recent. The fact is Americans have been defending themselves for a long time.

In a study done by the Bureau of Justice, 62,200 victims of violent crimes used guns to defend themselves between 1987 and 1992.

In another study aptly called the National Self-Defense Survey, Americans used guns in self-defense 2.3 million times a year between 1988 and 1993.

What is the Definition of Self-Defense?

It seems that the term “self-defense” is fairly ambiguous as it relates to the use of handguns.

In a recent news story regarding the defense of a fellow co-worker against an armed criminal, a concealed carry permit holder defended a store front without firing his weapon.

This to many, may be a loose definition of self-defense as the threat of a good guy defending his ground without firing a round can be enough of a deterrent to ward off criminals.

Author Gary Kleck of the above-mentioned National Self-Defense Survey is quoted from a different book on defensive gun use Armed: New Perspectives of Gun Control:

In general, self-protection measures of all types are effective, in the sense of reducing the risk of property loss in robberies and confrontational burglaries, compared to doing nothing or cooperating with the offender. The most effective form of self-protection is use of a gun.

If a criminal had a choice between robbing the guy with a concealed carry weapon or robbing the guy without, which would he choose?

Also, what are the effects on crime in the event a person does have a concealed carry gun?

A study by Firearms Research indicated that when compared to no resistance or a lack or resistance, self-protection with a gun reduced the likelihood of property loss and injury.

Generally speaking, resistance to criminals in the form of a firearm can help to reduce injury and loss of property or some other crime. To learn more about concealed carry permits in Citrus County, contact us today.
